The Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) has appointed one of its members, Eric Kazembe to act as chairperson until fresh elections to take place in a month’s time.

Kazembe heads the league following Stanley Mtuwa’s resignation as SRCL interim chairperson after being transferred to the Central Region by his employers, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom).

While describing Mtuwa’s exit as a big blow, SRCL general secretary Steven Gondwe and publicist Makhosi Nyirenda expressed confidence that Kazembe will ably lead the league.

Meanwhile, Chess Association of Malawi president Kezzie Msukwa has advised the regional body to prepare for elections next month.

“Mtuwa has notified us about his resignation as he has been transferred to Lilongwe. Therefore, SRCL will hold its elections before the end of September this year,” said Msukwa.

Mtuwa was elected vice-chairperson during the previous SRCL elections, but he was later elevated to the top seat, replacing Stanley Mpinganjira who could not continue to serve the league on constitutional grounds.
