In the girls’ section, the title hunt will be among Kalibu Academy, Army, Michiru View Girls, Our Lady of Wisdom, JBF and Jacaranda secondary schools.

In individual finals, national chess champion Khwima Gondwe, who earned maximum points during Blantyre qualifiers two weeks ago, will be tasked to prove his mettle against other finalists Yewo Sanga, Happiness Masuku, Chiyembekezo Chilembwe, Rafik Namangale, Ryan Mhango, David Mkomba, Hope Gondwe, Troy Namaona and Dumisani Maweja.

The girls’ section will feature Faith Gondwe, Mirabelle Chafumuka, Daisy Huwa, Zaithwa Chibisa and Gwala Magawa.

“Watch out for merciless Henry Mwapeya of Domasi, cautious Dalitso Kechi of St Patrick’s, unstoppable Daisy Huwa of Alipo Private, the calculating Alinafe Botha of Jacaranda, experienced Khwima Gondwe of Chichiri Primary and aggressive Faith Gondwe of JBF!” SRCL schools coordinator Margaret Ngugama waxed lyrical about the grand finale.

She said winners are expected to walk away with glittering trophies, twinkling medals and more prizes.

Ngugama signed off by appealing to the corporate world to come forward and sponsor the mental sport in schools as it is the future for Malawi chess. n
