St. John’s Hospital in fundraising big walk

St John’s Hospital in Mzuzu will on May 6 2017 hold a big walk to raise funds for modern equipment.

The 20-kilometre walk will start from Ekwendeni Trading Centre in Mzimba to St John’s Hospital in the city.

Phillmon (L) explaining the hospital’s challenges as Mwanza looks on

According to St John’s Hospital clinical superintendent officer Winson Mwanza, the institution is struggling to meet the growing demands of its clientele because the equipment the hospital uses is too old to be effective despite the hospital having well-trained personnel.

“As you might be aware that this institution was founded long time ago in the 1960s, most of its equipment is outdated and has been undergoing a series of maintenance works,” Mwanza said.

Commenting on the issue, the hospital’s senior administrative officer Elizabeth Phillmon, who is also secretary for the fundraising committee, said lack of modern equipment forces the institution to refer cases to Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Some of the equipment expected to be bought include blood pressure machines and resuscitators.
