St Mary’s alumni donates items to needy students

Alumni of St Mary’s Secondary School in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba, have given out assorted items to 30 needy students at the school.

The items included groceries, duvets, notebooks, suitcases and clothes.

Leader of the group, Gladys Mwayang’ana, said in an interview after presenting the items recently, they wanted to assist the students after noting that some of them lack basic necessities.

Said Mwayang’ana: “Some of these students come from poor background and do not have the privilege as their colleagues. So, we thought of motivating them in this way so that they work hard in school and be able to stand on their own in future.

“We also told all the students at the school that it does not matter where they come from, but that their dedication, determination and strong-will can change their destiny, of course, with God’s blessings.”

School head teacher Sister Mary Chimalizeni thanked the former students for the items.

“The path of a girl-child needs to be well-nurtured to bear the desired fruits. We humbly request other alumni wherever they are to think about helping students of their former school as their colleagues have done. This is commendable and I am at a loss of words,” she said.
