All over the world, Christians believe that a marriage blessed by a priest is acceptable to God and lasts longer than that born out of church.

And in keeping with this principle, 28 families flocked to St. Paul’s Cathedral of the Anglican Church in Blantyre to be blessed.

As time hit 8:30am, the couples, both old and youthful, had already lined up waiting for Reverend Father Auster Kalilombe to officiate their vows and life commitment to one another other.

The church was so packed that finding a seat was equivalent to carrying water in a bottomless pail.

Marriage counsellors and other invited guests wriggled and jiggled in response to gospel-love music playing from the public address system as Kalilombe and Deacon Reverend Friday Ojesi walked into the church.

Before blessing the couples, Kalilombe asked each one of them to make a number of commitments, including entrusting one’s life to the other both in happiness and sorrow.

“As we all know, marriage is the foundation of any church. If we build strong marriages, we will also be able to have strong churches,” he said.

Kalilombe also emphasised the need for the couples to teach their children the word of God so that they should not stray in adulthood.
