SBC managing director Stafford Mpoola said this during the prize presentation ceremony of the K200 000 (about $512) Mangochi Beach Soccer Tournament which took place at Nkopola Lodge on Sunday.

“I have been impressed with the two-day tournament. The organisation and the passion from teams to win have persuaded me to sponsor the league. Now I have decided to sponsor the Southern league to the tune of K1 million. This is just the beginning. If it happens that the league is successful, I will increase the amount,” he said.

Mpoola further said that by sponsoring the game, he is complementing government and FAM’s efforts to develop the minority sport.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu, who was guest of honour, commended SBC for the sponsorship, saying it will go a long way in improving beach soccer in the country.

“We have been struggling to find sponsorship for the Southern Region league for years. Your coming is a big relief and will tremendously improve the game,” he said.

Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) president Kondwani Gondwe was equally ecstatic at the news of the sponsorship.

“You are setting the pace for others to follow. We have big companies in Malawi, but they are reluctant to invest in beach soccer. Despite the bad economic times, you have decided to sponsor the league. We are very grateful for this,” said Gondwe.
