Standard 8, JC examinations results out

Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) on Thursday released results of the 2021 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) and reintroduced Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations.

Maneb said out of 270 558 learners who sat for the PSLCE, 226 809 have passed. This represents 83.83 percent pass rate, an improvement over the 81.7 percent pass rate recorded last year.

For JCE, the board said out of 129 928 candidates, 98 753 have passed. This is a pass rate of 76.01 percent.

Announcing the results in Lilongwe on Thursday alongside Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje, Maneb executive director Dorothy Nampota attributed this year’s success to careful and strict examinations administration.

She said Maneb has also improved greatly on efficiency as a way of enhancing credibility of certificates obtained after the examinations.

Said Nampota: “We stepped up monitoring of examinations, we supplied monitoring teams with necessary resources, including allowances, as such we have been able to do what would not be done in the past.”

In her remarks, NyaLonje hailed this year’s examinations success as a milestone in the history of examinations administration in the country.

She said: “Let me say that this is a positive development especially considering how as a country we have been performing in the area of examinations administration in the recent years. We are determined to bring back the integrity of the country’s education.”

NyaLonje reiterated that Malawi continues to suffer low transition rate from primary to secondary school due to under-funding in the education sector.

“Only 15 percent of learners that are supposed to be in secondary schools make it, leaving out 85 percent,” she said.

The Ministry of Education in 2016 abolished the JCE examination as part of public sector reforms, claiming that the move would save government about K2 billion in public funds.
