Standard Bank on Thursday night lived up to its word and splashed K1 million to outstanding journalists in the coverage of this year’s Standard Bank Knockout Cup.

The ceremony, that was spiced by a cocktail, took place at Atmosphere Restaurant in Blantyre where Nation Publications Limited (NPL) senior news analyst Garry Chirwa was named the best print journalist for a third year running. Bobby Kabango, also from NPL, shared the best photo-journalist award with Bonnex Julius of Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL).

This was the sixth time for Chirwa to scoop the award in eight editions.

“I feel greatly humbled to win the award for the third time on the trot. To me, what is important is the recognition that I contributed towards the tournament’s success. I think my workmates at NPL deserve special mention for their support in one way or the other. It is not just about me, it boils down to team work,” said Chirwa.

Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) reporter Mike Bango was named the best radio journalist. Paul Kamanga of MBCtv clinched the best television award while Alex Mezalumo of Nyasa Times scooped the best online journalist award.

Kabango and Julius will receive K100 000 each while the rest will get K200 000 each as their prizes.

The journalists were chosen by an independent panel of judges led by Maclan Kanyang’wa , who is the head of journalism and media studies at the Malawi Polytechnic. Other judges were Ellard Manjawira, a journalism lecturer at the Malawi Polytechnic, Mabvuto Kapyepye, author and managing director of Mlambe Consulting and Frank Phiri of FD Communications, who coordinated the judging exercise.

Standard Bank chief financial officer Temwani Simwaka said the knockout media awards have contributed to improvement in sports journalism standards as evidenced by high quality of entries.

“Tonight we take our hats off to both up-and-coming and seasoned journalists. They devoted their time and skill to providing news coverage and analysis of events on and off the pitch.

“Going forward, Standard Bank pledges to continue sponsoring these awards alongside the knockout cup,” she said.
