Steers and Debonairs have come up with a Monthly Mug Tournament for the Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) to keep chess players active throughout the year.

The food and catering service provider’s managing director Thomas Banda Nkosi said the inaugural contest will be held at the end of this month.chess

He said the top-three players of each monthly mug, dubbed Debonairs Pizza Chess Challenge, will qualify for the end-of-the-year winner-of-winners tournament.

“We want chess players to be active all year through monthly contests. Most of them do not practice the mental sport frequently due to lack of motivation,” he said.

SRCL vice-chairperson Peter Jailosi welcomed the development, saying it will help players in his fold to improve their skills ahead of international competitions.

“This is a brilliant initiative because our players will be able to improve their skills,” Nkosi said.

In another development, SRCL is expected to hold its qualifiers for the Presidential Juniors Chess Championships tomorrow at St Patrick’s Academy in Blantyre and Sunday at Likangala Secondary School in Zomba.

Six boys and an equal number of girls will represent the South at the national finals. n
