Stray lion kills three cattle in Chitipa

A stray lion believed to have escaped from Lwangwa Wildlife Reserve in Zambia is feared to have killed three cattle and attacked and seriously injured three people of Kasisi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwaulambia in Chitipa.

The three people were first taken to Chitipa District Hospital before they were referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital where they are being treatment as in-patients.

Chitipa Police Station spokesperson Gladwell Simwaka said police heard that the beast was spotted in Senior Chief Kameme and (T/A) Mwaulambia in the district.

A press release from Chitipa Police Station on Thursday last week indicated that the lion was also spotted at Malukwa and Sopelera, Kasisi, Ilomba and Lwakwa in T/A Mwaulambia in the district.

Police have since advised the public against moving around at night until the situation normalises.

“This animal is very dangerous. People should avoid moving at night,” reads part of the press release.

Currently, police and wildlife rangers are hunting for the lion.
