Strong wind injures 4, affects over 700 households

Strong wind and a heavy downpour injured four people and affected 752 households in Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District on Saturday.

Ntcheu District Council disaster assessment team leader Hastings Mlambuzi confirmed the development.

“We have reported the incident to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs [Dodma] so that they should help us,” he said.

The wind also blew off roofs of Mchochoma and Sanza primary schools.

However, 30 of the households have lost everything and they are temporarily accommodated by their relatives.

John Chakwana, one of the victims, has since asked government to assist them.

“We don’t have food and a place to sleep,” he said.

Sanza Primary School head teacher Mathias Nzeruzayekha said the disaster has affected pupils.

“Pupils cannot concentrate on their studies in structures without roofs,” he said.

Ntcheu district rural housing officer Linda Mgwira has urged people to use strong building materials for their houses.

“People should use materials that can withstand strong winds,” she said.
