The Mzuzu Second Grade Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday sentenced a Form Three student at Chibavi Community Day Secondary School to 18 years imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old girl.

The court heard that Peter Mhango, 18, from Sonda Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mtwalo in Mzimba had been defiling the girl since last year, which is contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Martin Bwanali said the convict pleaded guilty.

He said the convict told the court he was sleeping with the minor to feed the spiritual demon which has been tormenting him since he was in Standard Five.

Bwanali said Mhango disclosed further that defiling the girl was in fulfilment of the covenant he made when he joined an alleged satanic cult.

Meanwhile, police in the city have commended the court for the punishment.

Bwanali said such stiff punishments have among other factors contributed to the remarkable decrease of defilement cases by 43 percent in the first quarter of this year as compared to previous years.
