Subsidised cement for the needy —VP

Newly sworn in Vice-President Saulos Chilima has said it is only needy Malawians who stand to benefit from government’s plan to introduce subsidised cement and iron sheets.

Chilima said this in Ntcheu on Monday when he addressed a crowd at the Boma to thank people from the district for their loyalty to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as evidenced by the May 20 Tripartite Elections results.

The Vice-President said, through the subsidised items, government intends to reduce the number of people living in grass-thatched houses.

“I would like to assure you that we did not promise just to get your votes, but that is what we will do,” said Chilima.

He assured that the district should also expect construction of Tsangano and Kasinje roads to begin soon, noting it is a shame for Ntcheu to have no tarred roads apart from the M1 Road.

He said the DPP-led government will also continue with the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (Fisp) to ensure food security in the country.

Chilima, however, urged all Malawians to work together and develop the country.

“This is not time for campaign and, for all those whose candidates lost, don’t lose heart and let’s work together to bring back economic sanity to our country,” he said.
