Mponela Police ain the central Malawi district of Dowa say they are worried with increased suicide and drowning cases.

Statistics show that since January this year, the station has registered four suicide and five drowning cases.

Mponela Police spokesperson Kondwani Kandiado said on Wednesday most of the cases are attributed to excessive drinking and carelessness of sick patients, particularly those that are epileptic.

“Recently, a 69-year-old-man killed himself by hanging after struggling for three years with unknown sickness,” said Kandiado.

He said the deceased, Mazi Harrison, from Nyalubwe Village in T/A Msakambewa, before ending his life, is said to have pursued different medication for his illness but to no avail.

He said: “Those people who drink Kachasu and other beer should also refrain from crossing rivers while drunk.”
