The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has challenged Balaka Town Council’s claim of K4 million (US$9 828) as the cost of damages to Balaka Stadium during the fateful December 28 2013 Super League encounter between Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda on Friday said they are challenging the claim after their experts also assessed the damage.

“We went there with some engineers and they will come up with estimates. We realised that there was no proper assessment and they could not justify the cost.

“The rules say the home team and stadium owners are responsible for damages, so all stakeholders will share the costs proportionally,” said Banda.

Balaka Town Council director of planning and development David Gondwe, who earlier told The Nation about the estimated cost of the damage, yesterday said he was detached from the latest happenings over the stadium as he was on leave.

He referred the matter to Balaka district commissioner Lusidzi Nhlane who was not readily available for comment.

The violence cost the life of Wanderers fan, Lemiyasi Josita.
