Sulom clears Nomads on Chitsulo

The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has cleared Mighty Wanderers over allegations that they registered Tony Chitsulo illegally.

Silver Strikers lodged a complaint to Sulom last week, arguing that the Nomads illegally featured Chitsulo against their rivals Big Bullets in a TNM Super League derby as they were yet to clear him.

The Nomads risked losing the point they earned in that match.

However, Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said on Saturday that Chitsulo was properly cleared.

“Wanderers issued a K1.9 million [about $4 750] cheque to Silver as transfer fee for the player. A cheque is a legal tender, it is a mode of payment. If Silver did not want to be paid through a cheque, then they could have done that before accepting the cheque.

“In fact, even teams such as Silver Strikers and Big Bullets used the same mode of payment, therefore, why should it not apply to other teams?” Banda wondered.

He said all the necessary transactions were made and what remains is for the two teams to agree on the mode of payment.

However, Silver general secretary Mike Tembo said they made their position plain upon getting the cheque.

“Of course, we acknowledged receipt [of the cheque], but we made it clear that we would only issue a clearance upon the cheque being cleared.

“In any case, our case is simple, Wanderers should pay us the transfer fees,” said Tembo.

Wanderers GS David Kanyenda said they had been vindicated on the matter.

“We elected to stop payment having noted that they [Silver] were not negotiating in good faith. It was not true to suggest that our cheque was referred to drawer,” said Kanyenda.

Chitsulo was in the Nomads squad which faced Mafco in a league game in Dwangwa on Saturday.
