Sulom faults Silver on pre-selling matches

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has cautioned Silver Strikers over the pre-selling of tickets for their entire home matches in the 2020 season without consulting other stakeholders.

The Central Bankers on Monday announced the sale of their home matches, calling on interested soccer lovers to buy VIP tickets for all matches at K75 000 and ordinary stands’ tickets at K20 000.

The move, according to the club, is part of the Silver’s recently introduced commercialisation drive.

But Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said the Central Bankers have rushed to start the selling of tickets as they had to first consult all stakeholders.

“Despite it being a good initiative, we have not given any permission and we have not been briefed. FAM is also not officially aware.

“Sulom is supposed to be told the working modalities. Other stakeholders such as fellow Super League clubs, government and Malawi National Council of Sports [MNCS] are also supposed to know,” he said.

Banda said they will soon call for a stakeholders meeting on the way forward.

He added that the pricing of the tickets is Sulom’s responsibility.

“Sulom is the only body responsible for the pricing of TNM Super League matches in consultation with clubs,” he said.

In the 2020 season, Sulom is expected to come up withgate fees depending on the teams involved.

“Some matches will be at K2 000 while others will be at K1 000,” he said.

Silver chief executive officer Thokozani Chimbali said they would inform Sulom about the matter.

On modalities, Chimbali said their reconciliation would be done on match day.

“The reconciliation will use tickets issued on the day of the match and not actual cash collected. This is because those that will have paid in advance will be issued tickets on the match day. So the [gate revenue sharing] percentages shall be calculated on the tickets issued on the day of the match,” he said. Soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda hailed Silver for the initiative, but said they need the support of other stakeholders.
