Sulom mediates Nomads standoff

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) on Tuesday successfully mediated the fallout in Be Forward Wanderers camp. The board of trustees and representative of disgruntled fans agreed to hold an elective annual general meeting (AGM) at the end of the season.

Sulom intervened following a decision by some zonal supporters committee members to dissolve the executive and main supporters committees last weekend and replace them with interim ones due to the team’s continued poor performance.

However, the trustees challenged the decision describing it as unprocedural and unconstitutional.

Sulom general secretary (GS) Williams Banda, leader of the deferred interim executive committee Chipiliro Mpinganjira and trustees’ secretary Patrick Jumbe yesterday confirmed having held separate successful meetings.

Said Banda: “We first met the trustees and then later on the aggrieved party. It was resolved that at the end of the season, the trustees will set up a date for the elections and we [Sulom] will preside over the polls.”

The Sulom GS said it was further agreed that apart from the elections, the chairperson and treasurer of the outgoing committee should present reports for the last two seasons.

“It was important that we arbitrate for the good of the game and ensure that there is sanity. It is also important that we safeguard the [Be Forward] sponsorship.”

On his part, Mpinganjira said: “It was a good meeting. We are very thankful to Sulom and the trustees for taking the initiative to mediate and it shows that they are being pro-active.

“In the interest of the team, we have agreed to let the incumbent executive complete its tenure. It was important to take that route so that we safeguard sponsorship. Nevertheless, we hope that the elections will be done in good time so that the new committee should have ample time to prepare for next season.

“We also expect the outgoing executive to present audited accounts for the period they have been in office to ensure transparency and accountability.” n
