Barely a day before the transfer window closes, the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has said it has not yet processed any player transfer.

Sulom general secretary (GS) Williams Banda yesterday said despite reports about teams claiming to hit the transfer market which closes tomorrow, there has been no movement so far.

Banda: Maybe the clubs are still discussing behind the scenes

“Maybe the clubs are still discussing behind the scenes, but there is nothing concrete as of today [yesterday].

“Usually, clubs tend to leave it till at the 11th hour, but the closing date remains August 30 and we will not entertain any transfer deals after the deadline,” he said.

PremierBet Wizards midfielder Thuso Paipi, who is on loan at Silver Strikers, appears to be the most sought after player as he is reportedly being chased by three big guns—Nyasa Big Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Silver who want to buy him outright.

The People’s Team is also reported to be interested in signing the Bankers’ goaltender Brightone Munthali, Azam Tigers midfielder Yamikani Chester and Mozambican club FC Chibuto’s striker Chawanangwa Kawonga, who is also being eyed by his former team Silver.

But Bullets interim general secretary Kelvin Moyo yesterday said they will be in a position to know the players they are signing by 12.30pm today.

His Wanderers counterpart Mike Butao said: “There might be some activity. We need to release some players on loan to get playing time.

“There is also interest from Morocco and Japan, so we might at some point in the season, see some departures. We obviously cannot stand in a player’s way. So, to mitigate against such [imminent] departures, we might bring in two more players.”

The Sulom GS also said the flagship league body will advise on the actual date of the second round as the initial one [September 4] clashes with the Flames’ dead runner 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group L qualifier against Swaziland’s Sihlangu at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said they would ask Sulom to consider shifting the kick-off date.

Meanwhile, Banda has said the league will produce a booklet for the second round fixtures.
