After two false starts in the media, the E-Wallet talent competition is back with sponsorship from Sunbird Tourism Limited and will now be called Sunbird Search for a Star.

Originally expected to be launched in Mzuzu in June and then shifted to July, Tuesday marked the launch of the new and changed talent search competition which takes on a new twist and replaces E-Wallet.

“Sunbird Search for a Star will focus on unearthing individual musical talent and not ‘music and dance’, as was the case previously with E-Wallet,” said Sunbird Tourism’s group sales and marketing manager Titania Katenga Kaunda.

The talent search is being held in partnership with E-Wallet organisers and Sunbird Tourism. Axa Coach Services is the official transporter of contestants on its executive coaches.

Kaunda said there is hope that the partnership will focus on opportunities that can increase awareness and attract entries throughout Malawi.

“We are excited about the prospects of the Sunbird Search for a Star being bigger and better than previous years,” she said.

In his words on behalf of organisers of E-Wallet, Felix Njawala said it is their dream to produce a show, develop talent and produce stars that will shine at world stage, a dream they could not realise without help from the corporate world. And Sunbird Tourism has answered the call for help.

“This year, our role will be to coordinate, produce an acceptable and a good TV product,” said Njawala.

Registration for contestants starts today on the website www.ewallettalentshow.com/sunbirdsearchforastar.

The search is looking for contestants 18 to 35 years old who have never been involved in any professional recording or a professional band and currently residing in the country.

The auditions will kick off at Sunbird Nkopola on 23rd August, Sunbird Lilongwe on 25th August, Sunbird Mzuzu 26th August, Sunbird Livingstonia on 28th August, Sunbird Ku Chawe on 30th August and Sunbird Mount Soche on 1st and 2nd September. The launch show will take place at Sunbird Mount Soche onSeptember 28, and the grand finale on November 20 in Lilongwe.

Njawala hinted that this year contestants will be asked to sample some music from the 70’s and 80’s.

“They will be exposed to music of the Daniel Kachamba’s and the like,” he said.
