Mponda: A draw was a fair result

Surestream Academy Under-17 side’s remarkable run in the Arthur Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) First Division came to a halt at the weekend when they drew 2-2 with Mitole in Chikhwawa.

However, the academy outfit still stands proudly at the summit of the third-tier league with 10 points having won three games and drawn one.

Despite missing 10 key players due to other commitments, Surestream still displayed characteristic grit to come from two goals down in the first half against their determined hosts to force a draw.

However, the academy’s technical director Peter Mponda hailed his charges’ fighting spirit saying it was not easy to bounce back after trailing by two goals in the first half.

“Most of our players were not available, seven of them who are students at Joyce Banda Foundation (JBF), excused themselves as they had an audience with President Joyce Banda and there were also three others who missed the game due to various reasons.

“However, I should commend the boys for playing their lungs out, I think a draw was a fair result,” said Mponda.

James Laudoni and Madalitso Kondeni were on target for Mitole while Jabesi Chokhotho and Tony Baisi replied for Surestream.. Baisi is the league’s leading scorer with seven goals.

Second-placed Mangochi Police failed to go top when Luchenza ended their unbeaten run with a 4-2 thumping.

Before this match, Mangochi Police had won all their three games just like Surestream. They now trail the academy side by a point.

However, Mangochi Police officer-in-charge Elijah Kachikuwo said he is confident his team will recover from the loss.
