A person who allegedly wanted to break into a car and steal some accessories during the early hours of Wednesday was mercilessly beaten before being set ablaze by an angry mob in Lilongwe’s Area 36.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani confirmed the incident, but did not have particulars of the killed person.

Said Mushani: “This alleged thief wanted to steal from a resident of Area 36 whose car had broken down near St John’s at 1 am.

“He [the alleged thief] was in the company of his friend and wanted to take advantage of the breakdown to steal from the car owner who had decided to sleep in his car because of the nature of the breakdown. They broke the front window of the car and started fighting with the car owner who managed to shout for help and some well-wishers came to his help.”

Mushani said after catching the suspected thief, a mob mercilessly beat up the suspect before setting him ablaze.

He said the body, which was in a bad state, was buried at Lilongwe Girls cemetery upon the certification of police and hospital officials.

Vehicle owners in Area 36 have for the past three weeks endured a torrid time with thieves breaking into cars and stealing engine spare parts such as alternators, radiators, carburettors and distributors.
