Malawi’s top film actress Flora Suya has joined hands with Progressive Young Ambassadors for Development (PYAD), a youth club in the dusty populous Chinsapo Township in Lilongwe to help in talent identification.

The first leg of the initiative saw the talented actress having a two-hour inspirational interaction with the group members.

She observed that most young talents are ignored, unexposed and frustrated due to lack of support from their role models.

“I am motivated by my visit to PYAD. I have always desired to contribute towards the identification and promotion of young talent, especially in acting. PYAD has offered such a platform and will do everything possible to help in nurturing their talents,” said Suya, whose roles in Seasons of a Life and The Last Fishing Boat were sampled by the grouping before her visit.

However, Suya, who plans to establish an acting school, bemoaned the tendency of some parents who view acting as for loose girls, arguing it is time Malawians departed from such backward mentality and embrace their God-given talents.

“Some of us faced same challenges. We continue facing such from certain quarters. But I thank God for my talent that has taken me this far. At first, I could not do anything right from a given script. It was really hard and I could think of quitting acting at times. But I moved on for I knew the goal I had set way back. Such moments motivated my future,” recalled Suya

PYAD’s executive director Jonah Pankuku described Suya’s visit as inspiring to most youths who dream of making it big in life through acting.

“Talent identification, sharing and promotion is one aspect that PYAD focuses on. We are grateful to Flora for her commitment in the promotion of the talents we have here. We cherish her zeal towards helping us achieve our goals. The youth need such talent sharing and motivation from such models. From Suya’s shared humble beginning, many will be determined to reach same heights and even beyond in future,” said Pankuku.

Patricia Biliati, an aspiring actress and PYAD member, could not hide her excitement at rubbing shoulders with Suya saying this is a push towards meeting her long standing dream in acting.

“Flora inspires me a lot. She has motivated and given us extra wings to fly in acting. We are so overwhelmed by her passion to promote our talents,” said the seemingly overjoyed Biliati.

PYAD is a newly established youth grouping that strives to produce creative and proactive youths that are ready to become a solution to problems besetting them and their communities. n
