Swam, MOC on same page

It was a case of two love birds agreeing to establish a life-long relationship as the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) and the Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam) promised to complement each other’s efforts on Friday.

The occasion? Opening of the first-ever sports writers course in Blantyre to hone writing skills of various sports disciplines, courtesy of MOC.

MOC general secretary Hellen Mpinganjira, who represented the committee’s president Oscar Kanjala as guest of honour, assured the writers that MOC appreciates the role they play in advancing various sporting activities in the country; hence, the sponsorship.

“MOC is there for you and appreciates the role you play in society,” said Mpinganjira. She assured that the funding programme is there to stay as long as the journalists make the best of such courses.

The word from Swam president Peter Kanjere was as simple as challenging the sports writers to learn from the resource persons and go out to make a difference in their reporting of various sports disciplines.

“The Olympic games around the corner in London will serve as our litmus test,” said Kanjere, insisting that they do not necessarily need to be in London to tell Malawians what will be happening at the Olympics.

As we went to press, participants who had been drawn from across the country, with noticeable presence of the North and Centre, were still learning on how best to cover disciplines such as boxing, athletics, and the issue about Olympiasm.
