South West Education Division (Swed) have defended the Carlsberg sponsored Copa Coca-Cola schools tournament after beating Central West Education Division 2-0 on Sunday at Kasungu Community Centre ground.
Tathedwa Willard and Gift Jossam scored for Swed to ensure the cup returns to the south.
Swed received K1 million and a trophy whereas Cwed took home K750 000.
The three-day tournament, which kicked off on Friday, saw Cwed ousting South East Education Division (Seed) 14-13 through post-match penalties in the semi-finals while Swed beat Central East Education Division (Ceed) 6-5 also through penalties.
Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology Vincent Ghambi said his ministry is happy that this year’s edition was again a success.
“It is clear that there is abundance of talent in our schools and thanks to Carlsberg. My request is that please consider sponsoring netball in schools as well next year,” said Ghambi.
Carlsberg Malawi marketing director Gwynth Mchiela said her company is pleased to associate Coca Cola brand with the kids.
“Through this tournament Carlsberg is developing talent for the future using the Coca Cola brand. We are grateful to partner government in promoting sports in the country,” she said.
She also applauded the Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) for a good work in organising the tournament.
“The tournament was a success because of the good organisation by Massa and we are thankful for the efforts you put in this,” she said.
On his part, Massa general secretary Blackson Malamula expressed gratitude to Coca Cola for sponsoring the tournament for 48 years.
