Despite recently making a declaration that Kendal Kamwendo of Symon and Kendal is a now a born again Christian, the twosome have maintained that they will stick to playing secular music.

So far, they have recorded the songs Kapotopoto, Natalia and Sono Wamsanga.

In an interview with Symon Kamlaka, the artist said although the usual trend is for born again musicians to start composing gospel music, the pair has decided to maintain their secular touch, saying that is what they are known for and changing to gospel will jeopardise their ‘job’.

“Music is our job and we don’t want to jeopardise it. That is what brings bread and butter on our table. Just because my friend has turned to God doesn’t mean that we will automatically join the gospel industry. We have deliberately maintained to secular because that is what entertains our fans and, fortunately, we do not preach anything devilish in our music,” he said.

The musician, who usually speaks on behalf the group, justified their direction by jokingly giving an example of Christians who work for brewing companies.

“There is nothing peculiar in singing secular music. Haven’t you seen Christians working for alcohol brewing companies?” wondered Kamlaka, who studied theology at Kachebere Seminary.

Meanwhile, the duo has maintained their usual touch of composing songs whose lyrics dwell on food and its preparation.

“We are known for singing about types of rations that are locally found in our communities. We composed Nkhwiko, Nyemba Nyemba, Malamulo a M’memo and Therere, among others. We have maintained our touch this time around just to make sure that our fans get what we are known for,” said Kamlaka.

He added that since they are born again Christians, they will, as usual, compose a few songs that will have gospel touch.

The chart-topping duo is optimistic that the album will be a hot seller, courtesy of the apt talent of versatile producers who helped them to blend the music.

Having been silent for two years, he said, the duo were ensuring that they come up with something good for their fans.

“After the release Nkhwiko in 2012, we have been planning for the forthcoming album which will hit the market in May. We were preparing ourselves thoroughly so that we compose something that will meet expectation of our fans,” said Kamlaka.

The twosome came into the limelight in 2004 after releasing Nyemba Nyemba which spring them to fame.
