The Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP)

has launched a programme worth K500 million to reduce poverty in rural communities of Nthalire in Chitipa District.

Speaking after the launch on Wednesday, the synod’s general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo said poverty in the communities is the worst in the synod’s Northern Region catchment area.

Poverty in Nthalire is blamed on bad roads

“In our assessment, we found that Nthalire is suffering more than other areas in our catchment areas. Here poverty is above 60 percent. That’s why we decided to begin our project here,” he said.

The four-year project is named Community Action Against Poverty (CAAP) and will be implemented by the Church and Society Programme and the development department with funding from Transform Aid International.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction among vulnerable rural communities through sustainable empowerment where the focus is on quality public services, sanitation and hygiene as well as active citizenship, according to Nyondo.

Traditional Authority (T/A) Nthalire said poverty levels are high because of a poor road network. He said due to poor roads, there are few development activities.
