Malawi Police have moved in to provide security to Traditional Authority (T/A) Bvumbwe of Thyolo after he crossed paths with the ruling People’s Party (PP) at a funeral attended by President Joyce Banda, who is also the party’s leader fearing that his security is still in danger.

The T/A, during the burial ceremony of the late Joseph Manyungwa, who was High Court judge openly told the President that he was disappointed with the distribution of PP T-shirts at the funeral.

He told the President that it should never happen again, and if the party officials wanted, they could hold political rallies and distribute the T-shirts there.

Bvumbwe, who then went into hiding following death threats, resurfaced after a week. He dismissed reports that he was in hiding or went missing, claiming that he was still in control of his area.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the development in an interview on Thursday and said that there was nothing unusual with the police providing the T/A such security, saying his life might still be in danger.

T/A Bvumbwe could not be reached on his mobile to find out whether he still feels threatened.
