Malawian women’s football icon Tabitha Chawinga on Sunday scored a brace to further boost her chances of retaining the Chinese Superleague Golden Boot Award.

She scored the fourth and sixth goals as her team Jiangsu Suning clobbered Dalian 7-0.

Tabitha has now taken her tally to 13 with one game remaining while her closest contender has nine.

Jingsu Suning, who won the title with two games to spare last weekend, now have 36 points with one game to go before they wrap up the season.

“I will not take it easy, I need to finish the task by scoring more goals in our last game just to be on the safe side,” she said in an interview from China yesterday.

The Malawi national women’s football team captain said retaining the golden boot would put an icing on the cake after winning the title.

Her team is also on course to sweep all silverware after winning the League Cup and the Women’s National Championship Tournament.

They are also in the final of the last cup.

Overall, Tabitha has scored 32 goals this season as she netted 24 in cup games.

National women’s football team assistant coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi said Tabitha has been the hub of her team’s success.

“She continues to underline her credentials as one of the best women football players in the world. Her hunger, determination and passion are incomparable. No wonder she keeps on rising,” he said. Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu last week said the association is happy that Tabitha continues to hoist Malawi’s flag high and that her performances surpass expectations.
