Mbwana: I do not wait for funding

Long-time table tennis coach John Mbwana has switched on to darts where he is conducting coaching clinics.

A holder of an international coaching diploma obtained in Hungary in 2001, Mbwana on Wednesday said he would from next week drill the youth in the Eastern Division starting with Chancellor College in Zomba.
“I am reaching out to the youth through specific training programmes. I believe every sport has basic skills and these skills should conform to international playing standards. I am using personal resources to do this. That has always been my approach. I do not wait for funding,” said Mbwana.
During the clinics, Mbwana, who plays for the Blantyre and Districts Darts League’s Red Bulls, will impart knowledge on dart stance, muscle memory, choosing the right set of darts, resisting destruction, grip basics, throwing basics, practice guidelines and etiquette.
Darts Association of Malawi (DAM) tournament director Charles Katola confirmed yesterday that Mbwana’s initiative has the association’s blessings.
Mbwana has always played darts, but stamped his mark in table tennis alongside the late Floriano Massah.
