Mzuzu is set to host the 2018 Taekwondo National Championship at Mzuzu Youth Hall this Saturday.
Taekwondo Association of Malawi (TAM) has organised the competition with K1 million funding from Malawi National Council of Sports.
TAM general secretary Tenashe Mbawala said more than 30 athletes from taekwando clubs in Mzuzu, Salima, Lilongwe, Blantyre, Njuli and Zomba are expected to take part in both women’s and men’s junior and seniors categories.
Three top teams will receive cash prizes. The champions will receive K150 000, the runners-up will get K100 000 while the third-placed pocket K75 000.
So far, Northern Traders and Central Poultry have offered meals and accommodation to all the teams participating in the tournament.
Presenting part of the K100 000, for food and accommodation assistance, Northern Traders owner Paolo Losacco challenged the youth to be innovative and use their talents for survival in the country.
Meanwhile, Mzuzu Taekwondo Club has intensified its preparations.
