With a haul of two gold medals, starlet Joyce Tafatatha was the stand-out performer as Malawi swimming team finished eighth out of 14 at the Ninth Cana Zone VI Championship in Mozambique on Saturday.

There were eight medals, including two silver and four bronze for Malawi’s 21-member team at Maputo’s Zimpeto Swimming Pools, according to Malawi Aquatic Association (MAU) president Dean Pinto.

“All swimmers improved on their personal best times and it was encouraging. Charlton Nyirenda led the team well. South Africa were champions, Mozambique came second and Botswana third,” Dean Pinto said in e-mailed message on Saturday.

It was a perfect ending for Tafatatha who, on the opening day of the gala [on Wednesday], won silver in 50 metres breaststroke. Her specific finish time was not established.

The swimmers competed in 800 metres freestyle and butterfly, 50 metres breaststroke, 4×200 metres medley relays, and 100 metres backstroke in 17 and 50 metres, among others.

Other participating teams in the Mozambique championship were the Seychelles, India, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Angola, Uganda and Tanzania.

It was not established if any of the Malawian swimmers had met qualifying time for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
