Female aspiring politicians in Nsanje have asked authorities to prosecute perpetrators of sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) in the district.

Speaking on Friday during a Mock Full Council meeting organised by Women’s Legal Resource Centre (Wolrec) one of the aspirants, Fagrace Misoya, said it was sad that SGBV victims were denied justice due to the silence of authorities.

She said: “Again, we hear that some of the alleged perpetrators are teachers.

“Authorities should enforce policies and laws to protect girls from abuse. Girls should also have opportunities to contest in leadership positions in political parties.”

Misoya, who is also the district’s Young Women in Action Group member, commended Wolrec for organising the meeting to interact with political leaders which encouraged them to contest for parliamentary and local government seats in the 2025 Tripartite Elections.

In his remarks, Wolrec programmes manager Gift Mauluka said the Mock Full Council meeting gave the young female aspirants a platform to learn how the council conducts its business.

Wolrec is running a Young Women in Active Politics Project with funding from the European Union through Norwegian Aid and Dan Church Aid Malawi.
