TAM cancels national championships

Taekwondo Association of Malawi (TAM) will forego national finals of this year’s Presidential Taekwondo Championships national finals following cancellation of the same at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday because of the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

According to TAM president Benedicto Tsinde, the 2012 national finals will now be reduced to regional contests since there is no adequate funding to organise another national event for the finals.

“We have used much of the funds for the athletes’ accommodation and transport and the athletes had already arrived in Blantyre when the cancellation of the event was announced.

“Therefore, we have nullified the national finals and we would use funds remaining in our coffers to arrange regional challenge contests,” said Tsinde.

He said the regional events will be conducted a week after the 10-day mourning period.

According to Southern Region team coach Medson Ntila, although the replacement of the national finals by the regional challenge contests has denied them a chance to defend the title, the arrangement is worthwhile.
