Tawonga is Santos’ future

South African National First Division side Santos say Flames midfielder Tawonga Chimodzi will not go anywhere in the current transfer window as he is the future of the club.

Chimodzi’s three-year contract with the club expires in May and he has been linked to a number of Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams such as Amazulu, Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic.

The midfielder returned early to his base last week to discuss his future with the club.

But the club’s chairperson Goolam Allie said in an interview that the player will not be released.

“There are a number of players who will be out of contract in June and we are reviewing their positions. There has been a lot of interest for Chimodzi, but I am sorry to say hands off.

“He is off the market and we are going to offer him an appetising new deal which should be signed before the end of January.

“Chimodzi is one of our biggest assets and weaponry that will help us get back into the top-flight league. He is the future of the team,” he said.

Chimodzi told Weekend Nation last week he believes something good will happen in his career by the end of this month.

“Whether I stay at Santos or move to another club, I know I will get a good deal and I believe God has big plans for me in 2013,” he said.

Santos have also appointed Ian Palmer as their new coach.

Palmer was this month axed as coach of Absa Premiership side Black Leopards, but was not out of work for long. He was last week picked by Santos, who were seeking a replacement for the departed Dutch coach Mart Nooij.
