Malawi’s hip-hop artist Tay Grin, real name Limbani Kalilani, who was nominated for an All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) award last month, will celebrate the recognition with a show at From Dusk To Dawn club in Blantyre on Friday night.

Other artists who will support the hip-hop artist with their performances include Theo Thomson, Sonyezo, Tuno and DJ Nathan Tunes.

Tay Grin has been nominated in the category of Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa in this year’s Afrima for the song Tola which features Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee.

Nominated for the best male artist: Tay Grin

Tay Grin is up against South African artists including Hugh Masekela, hip-hop artist AKA, Nasty C, Emtee and Nduduzo. Jay Prayzah from Zimbabwe is also nominated for the same award.

The hip-hop artist told The Nation shortly after being nominated that he needs the support of Malawians to the award.

Said Tay Grin: “It’s a great honour to be considered one of the best acts in southern Africa, amongst the great names like Hugh Masekela. It’s great for Malawi music as we continue to conquer the world stage. This is a great achievement and I am very proud of this nomination.”

The awards will take place on November 10 in Lagos, Nigeria.

“I am calling on my fans to vote so that I can bring the award home. The party at From Dusk To Dawn is aimed at celebrating this nomination with my fans. I truly appreciate the support that I have always received here in Malawi and abroad,” said Tay Grin.

The artist, who has just returned from his tour of Iceland, South Africa, United States of America and England, said his fans will be crucial this time around considering that artists with more votes will be eventual winners.

“It is a game of numbers and I believe my fans will see the need to vote so that Malawi should once again shine. What I achieve as an artist is good for the country because I have always strived to represent the country wherever I have travelled or performed,” Tay Grin said. n
