Thousands of youths from Lilongwe on Sunday packed Masintha Ground in Lilongwe where hip-hop artist Tay Grin celebrated his recent success in Nyasa Music Awards.

During the awards, the artist walked away with Best Male Artist and Best Music Video awards. Tay Grin, born Limbani Kalirani, said this called for a celebration through free music shows.

The artist is also holding workshops with up-and-coming musicians to share skills with them. Before the Masintha show, he met 65 budding artists at Ifive in Area 15 on Saturday.

“It’s a great feeling to see the crowd. I have always been doing ‘thank you’ shows in secluded venues, but not everybody can make it. This time, I will hold free shows in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu to thank my fans,” he said.

The next celebratory gig will be held at the Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre next month before heading to Mzuzu.

As the Lubwa hit-maker dished out his popular songs, the fans erupted to thunderous cheers.

One of the up-and-coming artists, Sibongire Chilumpha, heaped praises on Tay Grin for sparing time for them.

“He made us appreciate what goes on in the music industry as an art as well as a business,” she said.

A few months ago, another hip-hop artist Fredokiss held a free hugely attended show at the same venue.
