Tay Grin gives ‘chief’ stick to Rick Ross

Multi-award winning artist Limbani Kalilani aka Tay Grin scored a mark at this year’s Secret Solstice Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland when he presented a gift of African walking stick to the world’s renowned hip hop star Rick Ross of Maybach Music stable.

Born William Leonard Roberts II, Rick Ross is an international hip hop icon, famed for songs such as the Hustlin’ and You The Boss. He shared the stage with Malawi’s Tay Grin and several others at this year’s festival held from 16th to 18th June.

Tay Grin performed at the festival on Saturday. However, apart from impressing with his unique African style, Tay Grin interacted with the world’s renowned artists.

“I felt it was necessary to give Rick Ross a gift of this nature as a way of respect and cementing the African-American music ties. He is one of the world’s respected artists who inspires a lot of people, including artists,” said Tay Grin.

He said the African stick, which he gave Rick Ross, symbolises kingship.

“This stick is made of a special tree from Malawi and is usually used by chiefs. So, I gave it to him as a special gift to symbolise his influence,” said Tay Grin.

He also met other artists such as America’s Young Ma and Big Sean. He described his interaction with world’s top artists as fruitful not only to him but Malawi as a whole.

“I have participated in the Secret Solstice Festival to represent Malawi. And I am honoured to represent my country and Africa because this has helped to raise the profile of my African roots on the global stage,” he said.

He added that projects of musical collaborations with American rappers were in the pipeline to maximise his brand and sell Malawi to the world.

Sporting a new look, including his trending gold beards, Tay Grin took pictures with several artists during the festival, including the organisers.

The Nyau King also met Dagur Bergbo`rson Eggertsson, mayor of the city of Reykjavik.

Meanwhile, showbiz commentators and fans have hailed Tay Grin for stepping up his musical game.

“From last year we have seen Tay Grin stepping up his game by improving his exposure on both local and international scenes. For example, his music videos have been a frequent feature on Trace Africa and other popular channels. This has not only helped to build his individual image but also that of Malawi,” observed Raymond Sekeni aka DJ Fraternal of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Radio 2 FM.
