Tay Grin goes political

Hip-hop artist Limbani ‘Tay Grin’ Kalirani is slowly becoming an influential and controversial musician of the new era if the message in his latest song is anything to go by.

Some say Tay Grin is rewriting the rules of hip-hop as his song Open Note is a hard- hitting and intense, hip-hop sound that will change the sound of music in Malawi and how politicians could handle entertainers for a long time.

Talk about the recent Madonna saga, seemingly his political ambitions; all has been well packaged in what other people would take the singer as defiant and militant, but some would put it as pure work of art.

Someone who listened to the tune said on the social media: “Truth be told Tay Grin has jerked Malawian hip hop music into an active political sphere. Tay Grin is becoming a self-proclaimed prophet of rage, and is set to become a major force of social change, disturbing Malawian government’s complacency with this highly-charged political statement reminiscent of the people’s cry during the past political eras gone by.”

However, Tay Grin said in an interview: “People in the public have a responsibility. What I say has an impact and normally when I do make a comment it means I have a deep passion towards the subject. In this case yes. We need to stand up as a nation and take control of our lives.

“We shouldn’t be taken for granted. Each and every Malawian plays a role in the development of this country directly or indirectly. I have always set out to make a difference and help build the music industry and bring about a certain dynamic that will act as a catalyst for growth and development. Let’s not be idle,” he explained.

The song was released last month.

Meanwhile, Tay Grin is putting final touches on his third album to be out sometime this year.
