A 31-year-old teacher at Maghemo Secondary School in Karonga died on Monday after excessive beer drinking, according to police.
Karonga Police Station spokesperson Enock Livasoni identified the teacher as Iraq Mlauzi.
He said the incident happened at around 1pm when Mlauzi went to Nthulawitule Bar while already drunk.
“When he arrived at the bar, he collapsed. He was left there until 10pm,” said Livasoni.
He said the matter was reported to police who visited the scene and the teacher was taken to Karonga District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“A postmortem revealed that he died due to drinking beer on an empty stomach,” said Livasoni.
The deceased came from Malawu Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Malanda in Nkhata Bay. n
