Teacher dies in Nkhata Bay accident

A 38-year-old teacher from St Augustine Community Day Secondary School in Nkhata Bay district died on Saturday in a road accident.

Nkhata Bay Police Station spokesperson Ignatius Esau said Davie Gondwe was involved in a head on collision with in an incoming vehicle while riding a motorcycle.

He said: “He was on Yamaha DT 250 motorcycle registration MG 388 travelling from Mukwiya going towards Nkhata Bay Boma.

“On arrival at Assemblies of God Church, as he tried to avoid a pothole, he swerved to the offside lane and collided with an oncoming vehicle, Mitsubishi Canter registration RU 3390 driven by Augustine Mwafulirwa,” said Esau.

He said Gondwe sustained internal injuries and died on arrival at the hospital while his pillion passenger escaped with minor injuries.

The motor vehicle had the driver door glass broken while motor bike was also damaged, according to police.

Gondwe comes from Chozoli Village, Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe  in Rumphi. n
