At least 24 primary school teachers and lawn tennis players are undergoing a two-week long Level-One International Tennis Federation (ITF) Coaching Course in Blantyre.

ITF consultant Zimbabwean Prince Madema is facilitating the 12-day training funded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC).

During the opening ceremony of the training at the Sports Council yesterday, MOC president Oscar Kanjala urged the participants to apply the knowledge they will gain at the course.

“We did a similar training few years back and the participants did well in exams. However, they did not put their knowledge into practice. Therefore, while thanking you for availing yourself to this training, I urge you to take stock of your obligations. We want to see results from the skills you will obtain,” Kanjala said.

Representative of the participants, Ronald Kandulu, promised hard-work both in class and on the field.

According to Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) national coach Hackson Methiwa, the course has drawn 14 teachers and 10 senior players from Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

He said the training will be conducted at the Sports Council but the practicals will be done at the College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex.
