The Malawi Interfaith Aids Association (MIAA) says given opportunities, teen mothers can support themselves and their families.

Executive director for MIAA Robert Ngayiyaye was speaking on Wednesday when he gave business equipment to Our Future and Tasankha teen mothers groups in Salima.

The equipment included five sewing machines, five hair dryers and bakery materials worth over K3 million.

He said time had come for teen mothers to be independent rather than depend solely on their husbands.

“We believe a lot of you got pregnant and gave birth while in early classes of secondary school while others in the late classes of primary level. Falling pregnant or having a child at your age should not be the end.

“We see great potential in you and that’s why we are giving you these machines to enable you tostart businesses,” said Ngayiyaye

Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwanza thanked the organisation for assisting the girls and elevating their economic status.
