Teen pregnancies worry project

The Hunger Project Malawi has expressed concern over increased cases of child marriages registered in Chikwawa which the project says derails development.

On Tuesday, during the organisation’s 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence (GBV) in Traditional Authority Chapananga in Chikwawa, The Hunger Project’s national council member Mary Mphepo said some girls are misinterpreting the schools readmission policy and so, they seemingly do not care whether they get pregnant.

Nhlema: Teen pregnancies are worrisome

Speaking on Wednesday during an HIV awareness meeting in Traditional Authority Kasisi in the same district, the Hunger Project board chairperson Rosemary Nhlema said the rate at which girls are getting pregnant is worrisome.

She added that parents have a big role in protecting girls from malpractices that can affect her future.

Guest of  honour Veronica Mkukumila, who is also Chikwawa district environmental health officer, said it is a shock that some people do not report GBV cases for fear of losing a job, family or some opportunities.

“It’s a plea to stakeholders and other people to join hands to end GBV and promote the welfare of our children,” she said.
