Tembo, Komakech triumph in Shankers Golf

Shepherd Tembo on Sunday emerged the winner of the Shankers Golf Tournament at  Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC).

The tournament, which was played on medal format, was sponsored by Lilongwe-based grouping of golfers called Shankers.golf

Tembo had 73 points, his runner-up Chris Mpanga registered 82 points while Mike Kalulu was third on 83 points.

Kalulu also had the longest drive whereas Kalulu was nearest to the pin.

An ecstatic Tembo said  he enjoyed his round of golf and deserved to win.

“I’m glad to have won today especially after beating my rival  Mike [Kalulu]. I enjoyed my golf and had a wonderful time, “ said Tembo who received a set of wine glasses plus a trophy as his prizes.

In the ladies category, Sandra Komakech was the winner with 80 points. Ironically, Jochebed Mpanga wife to Chris, also finished second in the ladies category with a score of 82 points, whereas LGC marketing manager Juliette Masonjo finished third with 100 points.

In her victory speech, Komakech thanked Shankers for the tournament.

“This is my first major win and it feels so good.  I thank my husband for the support, “ she said. Komakech got a rice a Sunbeam rice cooker plus a trophy.

Mpanga, who is Shankers liason officer, said the group was  formed  based on the values of friendship, socialisation, team building and also contributing towards social and economic development of Malawi.

He said some of the objectives are to map out and discuss issues affecting the country both in the social and economic development and devise ways and measures which can contribute to policy and decision making in various sectors in which the golfers work.

LGC chairperson Neil Nyirongo thanked Shankers for organising the tournament.
