High tempers characterised the Northern Region Big Bullets FC Supporters Committee elections on Saturday as scores were barred from entering Chenda Hotel Hall in Mzuzu for failing to pay a K500 participation fee.

However, the fee condition did not go down well with some quarters of the club’s faithful, who questioned its rationale.

Apparently, this killed the elections pomp and colour as many chickened out, allowing former chairperson Bosco Bakali and his team to go unopposed.

“Why should we pay for the elections? We should have been told in advance,” one of the fans, John Phiri, was heard shouting.

Brown Afiki, who was elected deputy publicity secretary was earlier forced out for refusing to pay the money. He had to surrender his mobile phone handset as surety to contest.

Sensing danger, trustee Ruth Chenda Mkandawire and other former executive members, paid for some fans on condition that they would pay back.

Mkandawire accused the fans of not loving the team, arguing that it was agreed at a previous meeting that the money was part of fundraising for the club.

Meanwhile, Scrivinia Dzonzi was elected vice-person, Fweta (secretary), Robert Mkandawire (publicity secretary) Afiki (deputy publicity secretary) and Jackson Mgemezulu (treasurer).

Committee members are Omar Mbwana, Wezi Nyondo, Shafi Gama, Kondwani Phiri, Willard Mkwamba, Charles Kumwenda, Alice Mwangupiri, Lesa Muva, Abas John, Hasan Bakali and Hassan Makala.

Speaking as guest of honour and observer, Northern Region Football Committee (NRFC) general secretary Masiya Nyasulu and Mighty Wanderers advised the committee to consolidate efforts in sourcing sponsorship for the club.
