Tengatenga heads new PAC executive

Bishop James Tengatenga of the Anglican Church’s Southern Malawi Diocese has been elected new chairperson of the influential Public Affairs Committee (PAC) at the end of the inter-faith civil society grouping’s annual general meeting (AGM) in Blantyre on Thursday.

Blantyre CCAP Synod’s the Reverend Felix Chingota, who is moderator of St Columba CCAP congregation, is Tengatenga’s deputy.

PAC is made up of the main Protestant, Catholic and Muslim faith groups in Malawi.

During the elections, Father Emmanuel Chimombo was elected board secretary, Father Peter Mulomole as publicity secretary and Sheikh Salmin Omar as treasurer.

PAC executive committee members are Caroline Bwanali-Mussa, Yacinta Mtambo, Chris Chisoni and Bishop Godfrey Matonga.

The AGM also elected PAC board of trustees and the members are Bishop Fanuel Magangani and the Reverend Timothy Nyasulu from Malawi Council of Churches, Osman Karim from Quadria Muslim Association of Malawi, Sheikh Idrissa Mahomed and a Mr Twanje from Muslim Association of Malawi, Auxiliary Bishop Montfort Stima from Episcopal Conference of Malawi and the Reverend Fletcher Kaiya from Evangelical Association of Malawi.

Chingota, making an acceptance speech on behalf of Tengatenga who was elected in absentia, said his new executive committee would work to the best of its ability and would uphold PAC values.

He said the new PAC leadership would also always consult other bodies in their operations, requesting the membership to always pray for the leadership to enable it discharges its duties efficiently.

The outgoing acting chairperson Sheikh Imuran Shereef Mahomed said earlier it was his belief the new executive committee is composed of people with high integrity.
