Tevet students threaten nationwide demonstrations

Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education Authority (Tevet)  Apprentice Union of Malawi has planned to stage a nationwide demonstration against Tevet secretariat on September 16 this year.

The union wants to protest against poor conditions its members, who are students in all technical colleges in the country, are subjected to in their respective learning places.

Msasa: We explained to them what we are doing

In an interview with The Nation in Mzuzu on Wednesday, the union president Justice Mwase said outgoing students who are yet to be given their certificates will also take part in the demonstrations.

“We have written Tevet secretariat on several occasions seeking their intervention but they are not responding. We have, therefore, decided to stage a nationwide demonstration so that our voice can be heard,” he said.

The concerns include shortage of working tools, delays in issuing certificates, delays in allowance disbursement and allocation of unequal allowance rates.

“Our observation is that the secretariat is focusing more on short- term donor-funded projects rather than the core apprentices programmes. We have few attachment places and many of them have poor working conditions,” he said.

In his remarks, Teveta head of corporate affairs Lewis Msasa advised the union to be well organised if they are to be assisted.

“The challenge is that they are in two unions.  We met the other group two weeks ago and we explained what we are doing on their concerns,” he said. n
