The Very Best, a Malawian/Swedish pop duo, will this month perform at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, which is one of the biggest music festivals in the world.
The Very Best is a collaboration between London-based Swedish DJ/producer Johan Hugo and Esau Mwamwaya, a singer from Lilongwe and their music has been described as an Afro-Western mix of dance, hip-hop, pop and the traditional music of Malawi.
The group performs on June 25 at the Glastonbury Festival, which is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts that takes place near Pilton, Somerset in the UK.
Some of the headliners for this year’s event are Coldplay and Adele.
The Very Best will play alongside iconic Malian singer Baaba Maal for his set on the Pyramid stage, which is the biggest stage at Glastonbury, in the afternoon before jumping onto the West Holts Stage at 8pm.
“This is a really special thing for us and we are really looking forward to it. We are trying to make it something really special,” Hugo said.
Apart from touring Europe and America, The Very Best have performed on some big music stages and festivals around the world, but Hugo says Glastonbury is a career highlight.
“It’s definitely up there with some of the really amazing things we have gotten to do; festivals are always amazing and we are always really excited when summer is starting and festivals are beginning. And I think our new band is really amazing too, so this is the first time we are doing these kind of big shows with the full new band which makes it extra special cause our live show is much better these days,” he said.
The Very Best are three-time performers at the Lake of Stars Festival.
Two weeks after the Glastonbury Festival, The Very Best will be back in the UK to perform alongside top UK band Mumford & Sons at Hyde Park in London.
