Hordes of gospel music lovers in Mzuzu braved the rains on New Year’s Day to witness Great Angels Choir’s Mwasankha Ine DVD launch.

The group may boast of the tag ‘the People’s Choir’, but the fans at Sunbird Mzuzu’s Boma Park proved how much people love the choir.

The estimated 4 500 patrons stayed put on an open space, others under umbrellas and a few under the shades as the rains poured for nearly 45 minutes.

It rained cats and dogs to the extent that the show came to a halt after the choir performed a single song, as the stewards had to move equipment away from the rains.

The patiently waiting drenched fans resorted to entertaining themselves with the acapella version of Great Angels’ songs.

Outside the venue, the queue was endless, although a few left. Such is the love that people have for the choir which, in three weeks, sold more than 40 000 copies of the DVD. The CD has sold 145 000 copies.

But after the rains, it was business as usual. The choir performed various songs from the album which is selling like hot cakes.

Some of the songs include Tadikira, Msalolere, Kodi Alipo?, Opanda Dipo and the title track Mwasankha Ine.

They also performed songs from their previous album Ndiyende Bwanji, which was released in 2010. The Lilongwe-based choir has other albums Mundifungatire (2005) and Gwireni Dzanja (2007).n
